inSPIRE Rock

Not only is inSPIRE Rock the best of the climbing gyms in Houston for beginners, but it is the best for new climbers of all ages. From youth climbing events to the adult bouldering league, they’ve got it all. First of all, they try to put on multiple climbing events throughout the year. No matter what, you can always count on the bi-annual “Headlamp Hootenanny” as well as the annual “Back-to-School Bloc Comp” with bouldering, brats, and beer. As of August 2024, they also have a 5-year anniversary party and bouldering competition in the works for October. These events are the perfect way to invite new climbers into the space. You can bring your friends, enjoy the company and learn about climbing all at the same time.

Climbing Education

When it comes to climbing education, inSPIRE Rock takes new climber safety seriously. They have clear safety statements on the website and will be sure to test and certify all new climbers. They also offer belay classes every single day of the week, for any new climbers who want to test and get certified to top rope or lead climb.

For the Kids

Children are the most important beginner climbers to consider. We need to teach them to enjoy climbing by being SAFE at all times. Then you can have tons of fun!! That’s why inSPIRE Rock houses four recreational youth climbing teams and three competitive teams. They also put on summer break, winter break, and spring break climbing camps for the kids. The camps aren’t just for new climbers, but for climbers of all experience levels. However, joining a camp is a fantastic way for new young climbers to meet others who share their interests and can help them grow their climbing abilities.

For the Adults

For adults who are new to climbing, the ropes course is a thrilling way to get used to a harness. If you run team building at your job, you might want to consider signing everyone up for a session with the Team Synergy Teaming Building ropes course at the gym. This adventure-based program combines outdoor adventure with realistic teamwork demands in the corporate world.

Best Budget Climbing Gym

Climbing Types: bouldering, top rope, lead
Price: $18/day pass, $65/month, $780/year
Location: The Woodlands
Other Activities: youth programs, adult social events, private lessons, ropes course

Climb Woodlands

The Woodlands is definitely not the most convenient location for every rock climber in Houston, but if you live or work nearby, your wallet is going to LOVE you. They offer the least expensive annual rate of all climbing gyms in Houston, which is tied with Texas Rock Gym (TRG) and Space City at $780/year. However if you add an additional family member to your plan, CLIMB Woodlands beats both of the other gyms as the most affordable option by $30, per person, each year. This is not a huge price difference, so honestly if you find yourself closer to the TRG/Space City locations they’re also a great budget choice.

Price

Here are some more details on the price options at CLIMB Woodlands. Homeschool members get the advantage of only paying $45 for a monthly membership. College students get a discount as well! They only pay $58/month to climb. If you need to rent gear, it will cost you an additional $15 each month. Members also get 10% off on any retail items in the CLIMB Woodlands store.

Unique Additions

CLIMB Woodlands has everything you might expect to find in a climbing gym, plus a bit more. Not only do they have large areas for bouldering and rope climbing, but they also have a ropes course! Which is such a fun activity for children and adults alike. They also put on weekly climbing classes and team meetups for anyone looking to improve their skills in a group setting. You can best keep up with their event schedule by following their Instagram account @climbwoodlands.

Best Rope Climbing Gym

Climbing Types: bouldering, top rope, lead
Price: $15/session, $65/month, $780/year
Location: League City
Other Activities: group events, birthday parties, lock-ins

Space City Rock Climbing

Going to Space City to climb has its benefits and challenges. It’s up to YOU to decide what fits your lifestyle best. Some climbers would rather attend a well-rounded gym with yoga and cardio available as well, while others will prefer a climbing-focused environment. Space City Rock Climbing can definitely be described as more climbing-centric than many other climbing gyms in Houston.

The Arched Roof

If you are sport climbing obsessed, you won’t find more interesting climbing walls anywhere else in Austin. Space City has an arched rooftop that you can climb to the point of being completely parallel with the group. The roof is designed to emulate natural rock formations such as Sex Cave at Reimers Ranch and the Library Wall on Bull Creek. Logically, Space City’s artificial arched roof is one of the best places to practice these parallel climbs indoors.

Reservation Info

While the arched roof is a big upside, the reservation system at Space City is a downside to me. Reservations are always required at Space City, which means you can’t just head over to climb whenever you want. You need to make a reservation beforehand in order to climb. Each session costs $15. However, if you purchase a monthly membership reservations are unlimited. You will also get exclusive member access to the gym on Tuesday and Thursday evenings from 8:00 to 9:00 p.m.

Personally, I love being able to climb whenever I feel like it – especially when my friends decide to climb and invite me along last-minute. With a reservation system, I would find it more difficult to climb consistently. Although if you enjoy routine, you may like the additional accountability that comes with making a reservation to go climb.

Best Multipurpose Gym

Climbing Types: bouldering, top rope, lead
Price: $22/day pass, $70/month, $840/year
Location: Northwest Houston
Other Activities: climbing classes, youth teams, private lessons, yoga, martial arts, outdoor climbing trips

Climb Capuchin

*UPDATE* as of August 2024, Texas Rock Gym is rebranding itself to Climb Capuchin. When I started to write this blog post, Climb Capuchin was Texas Rock Gym. During my research, I learned that they are rebranding! This information has been updated as recently as October 2024.

Classes and Clubs

Capuchin is home to two youth climbing teams (ages 5-17) and also hosts family climbing nights so the whole gang can enjoy trying out routes together. Not only that, but you can also find multiple climbing classes available – from beginner lessons to sport climbing and lead belay training. If you or someone in your family would benefit from private lessons, Capuchin offers that as well!

Martial Arts

Capuchin does provide an impressive amount of climbing education courses and clubs. However, the activities that truly put them above the others as the “best multipurpose gym” is their focus on martial arts and outdoor climbing trips. Aikido classes are available Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays, multiple times each day. You can take Tai Chi classes on Thursdays and Saturdays, and Kung Fu on Tuesdays and Saturdays.

Outdoor Trips

When it comes to outdoor climbing trips, Capuchin organizes at least one trip every month. Adults who are 18 and over can attend – and keep in mind that the trips are NOT guided. You’ll need to bring your own food, drink, and gear. The awesome part, however, of going with a pre-planned group, is that you can choose to carpool and book lodging as a team. Which makes going out to climb on the weekends so much easier.

Best Climbing Gym for Families

Climbing Types: bouldering, top rope, lead
Price: $25/day pass, $84/month, $999/year
Location(s): Silver Street, Katy
Other Activities: yoga/fitness classes, cardio, weight training, youth programs, social events

Momentum Indoor Climbing

Whether you are part of an experienced climbing family or a parent who wants to introduce their child to the sport, Momentum is the place to be. With locations in Utah and Washington State in addition to Houston, there are definitely a few connections to the outdoor climbing world up in the northwest. Between the two locations in Houston, Momentum offers the full spectrum of climbing experiences – even speed climbing!

Youth Programs

There are two main reasons why Momentum is the best climbing gym for families in Houston: the youth programs and the family discounts. The gym offers 5 different youth programs for ages 3 to 18, and they span throughout the year. The Summer and Winter Camps (ages 4-16) offer a variety of climbing-centered activities for a few hours each weekday. Momentum also offers financial aid to families who need it. Mo Mini (ages 3-7) is a 12-week course where children can spend an hour each week learning about the fundamentals of “climbing movement”.

Base Camp (ages 8-11) is a program where children can participate in games and drills that challenge their skills on the wall while growing their confidence with climbers of similar age and skill. The Youth Club (ages 12-18) is for any children who want to meet at least weekly and develop their technique as climbers. Lastly, the Competition Program (ages 7-18) is for climbers who are eager to compete. Members will be expected to participate in local, regional, divisional and national events.

Pricing

When it comes to membership pricing, Momentum has great family package deals. While an annual individual membership costs $999, a family of two membership goes for $1,728. A family of three costs $1,992 and a family of four costs $2,256. If you have a family of five or more, the membership rate stops at $2,520. The more family members you have, the less it costs per person. This is an AMAZING deal for large families.
